A Successful Salt Lake Design Week

10/30/2014

The week before last marked the fourth annual Salt Lake Design Week, a six-day celebration of all things design and it’s impact on our local community. The broad range of events included workshops, lectures, studio tours, and presentations. SLDW also went far beyond the familiarity of graphic design, highlighting other disciplines such as architecture, environmental design, fashion design, product design and several others.

This year, Jibe was lucky enough to be in charge of the branding and web design. We based everything off of the angled geometry that exists in the SLDW logo. From there we developed patterns, colors, an icon set, and a motion graphic video. Look out for a new addition to our portfolio coming soon.

Fortunately, Jibe and our various team members were able to attend several amazing events (when client work allowed). All were very enlightening and entertaining. Here are a few highlights:

PechaKucha Night—SLC vol. 13
Monday’s opening night for SLDW was a PechaKucha, a unique and fast-paced presentation format that allowed several local artists and designers to present twenty slides for twenty seconds each.

Adobe Presents: Special Guest Gemma O’Brien
Adobe played host Tuesday evening to a lecture and presentation by the very talented Gemma O’Brien. Known around the world, Gemma is a Sydney, Australia-based typographer, hand-letterer, and illustrator.

Paul Rand: A Look Back at the Legacy of the Graphic Design Master
Randall Smith of modern8 delivered a fascinating presentation of Paul Rand, one of the most famous and influential graphic designers of all time. Some of his most famous work include the logos for ABC, IBM, and Westinghouse.

Studio Tour
Jibe was one of eight stops on the guided bus tour that visited various design studios around town. We hosted over forty guests (a record-breaking number in our office, for sure) and were able to chat with students and fellow designers while showing of our workspace (with fresh paint!).
